How to Prevent Bed Bugs from Spreading

The common bed bug is a most uncommon pest. It is a parasite that is only interested in you, so that means it does not feed like other insects nor is it bothered by the poisons and pesticides that kill most pests. They are tiny and difficult to see and many people mistake the bite of bed bugs for mosquitoes or other causes that leaves the infestation unchecked.

How Bed Bugs Enter the Home

However, you do have one important advantage on your side. Bed bugs can only enter your home in a specific way. Unlike virtually all other insects that can crawl in through the yard, bed bugs cannot live long in the open environment. There is basically only two ways they are getting into your home

  • In your clothes or luggage while returning from a trip.
  • In someone else’s clothes or luggage entering your home.

The inherent weakness of bed bugs is that they are highly specialized insects that are specific to living off human blood. When you take away their ability to travel into your home, you’ll never have to worry about a bed bug infestation. However, it is still possible to miss a potential entry of bed bugs if you are not diligent.

How to Keep Bed Bugs at Bay

The first and foremost rule to preventing bed bugs from entering is to monitor your own travels so that you do not bring any of the pests with you back home.

Travelling: If you are travelling, especially in another country there are steps you can take to prevent bed bugs from coming back home with you.

  • Keep your luggage off the floor and away from the walls
  • Keep dirty clothes in a separate plastic bag
  • If you notice bed bugs where you are staying, wash everything out including luggage

Bed bugs do not go very far on their own, so put your luggage up in places where they cannot reach them. By keeping your dirty clothes in a separate bag, you are preventing any bed bugs from invading the rest of your luggage. Finally, if you should notice some bed bug bites after a night’s stay, get out of there and be sure to wash your clothes and your luggage.

Guests: The only other way bed bugs can get into your home is if you have company that brings them inside. However, there are some steps you can take to help eliminate the threat.

  • Encase the mattress and box springs in plastic wrap or sheets
  • Wash all bedding once the guest leaves

If your guest stays on the sofa, you will want to provide them with bedding so it can be washed once they leave. If you have a guest room that only guests will stay, the bed bugs will tend to stay in that room. However, by simply washing the bedding after your guest leaves as well as sealing up your mattress, you will effectively stop the bed bug invasion.
